North Carolina has one of the largest military populations in the United States, with nearly 300,000 active duty, National Guard, and reserve members and their dependents, as well as more than 600,000 veterans. NC American Legion

As the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, the American Legion is devoted to mutual helpfulness, and is committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.

NCServes

NCServes is your connection to hundreds of community-based providers across the state. It is the first coordinated system of public, private, and non-profit organizations working together to provide support to veterans and their families access to a class-leading continuum of providers ranging from superior housing and emergency service providers to employment, recreation and fitness, financial capabilities, and more.

Educational

N.C. Department of Military & Veterans Affairs

A four-year scholarship program at approved schools in North Carolina has been established for the qualifying natural or adopted (before age 15) children of certain class categories of deceased, disabled, combat or POW/MIA veterans.

Warrior-Scholar Project

Warrior-Scholar Project hosts intensive and immersive one and two-week college-preparatory academic boot camps for enlisted veterans and transitioning service members at leading universities, including UNC Chapel Hill. They also offer one-day college success workshops that  provide aspiring student veterans with the skills needed to succeed in community college and beyond. Programming is provided at no cost to students.

Employment Seeking

Carolina Alumni Career Services

Alumni may obtain career assistance by contacting Alumni Career Services at the General Alumni Association (GAA). GAA members receive one complimentary career coaching session once every 12 months, open to all majors, industries, and career levels.

NC4ME

NC4ME (NC for Military Employment) is a comprehensive public-private partnership specific to veterans seeking employment and to employers interested in hiring veterans. Their mission is to make North Carolina the #1 state for military employment.

NC Works

NCWorks is an online platform provided by the NC Department of Commerce for job seekers and employers. They have a Veterans Portal that provides databases for jobs, training opportunities, career fairs, and other resources and services. NCWorks also has offices throughout the state.

Carolina Military & Veterans Law Clinic

The Military and Veterans Law Clinic primarily serves low income former servicemembers who are currently precluded from receiving Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care and disability benefits because of their discharge status. Students represent clients before military administrative boards and the VA. Students may also serve as expert veterans benefits consultants for active duty military defense counsel.

Legal Aid of NC Veterans Law Project

The Veterans Law Project is a special, statewide unit of Legal Aid of North Carolina that helps low-income veterans overcome service-related legal barriers that prevent them from living self-sufficiently and seeking economic opportunity. Services include disability compensation, discharge upgrades, and pension benefits.

Post-Homelessness

Vets on Track Foundation

Vets on Track Foundation’s mission is to end veteran homelessness and significantly reduce the number of suicides by helping re-build self-worth, self-dignity, pride, and purpose. The Vets on Track Foundation assists veterans exiting homelessness by providing necessary resources to make a smooth transition. From temporary to permanent housing, household furnishings and follow-on care, we eliminate a huge financial burden and truly give our unsung heroes a hand-up in restarting their lives.

NC VetBiz (previously the NC Veterans Business Association) is a member–operated association of veteran professionals and business owners working to develop and strengthen the veterans’ business network in North Carolina. By leveraging our collective, we are able to address business issues affecting our membership and work to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes for the business community and North Carolina.

The Veterans Healing Farm — Hendersonville, NC

Offers workshops on innovative farming techniques and foster a thriving micro-community of veterans and civilians who build deep friendships and cultivate emotional, physical, and spiritual health. Additionally, we support our nation’s veterans by growing and donating high-quality fruits, vegetables, and flower bouquets to veterans and their caregivers free of charge.
